It was the last expression he wanted to see on her face. He was used to taunting, smug grins and sarcastic grimaces, open smiles that she wasn’t aware she was showing. This, though. There was pain in her eyes. Anyone who said blind eyes were expressionless had obviously never seen the bright jade of her eyes when she laughed tauntingly, the milky pale green calmness in them when she muttered a joke aimed at him. Now there was an intense dark glint in them he hated to see.

She’s curled up in a corner of Appa’s saddle, clinging to the wooden frame weakly. Katara is asleep, and Aang is too excited to have his bison back to really count in this moment.
“I felt his heart slowing down,” she murmurs so quietly. “It was... I’d never felt that in anyone.”
“It’s... we couldn’t have stopped it happening. Sometimes... it’s just time for the end. But the end of one person’s life,” he almost chokes on it, “Doesn’t mean their spirit won’t live on, and it doesn’t mean that life has to stop for everyone else.”
She nods at last, sighing.
“It made me think... we’re involved in something really dangerous right now. What if...” She, too, doesn’t let the full concept escape her throat.
“We’re going to be okay. I promise. I’ll...” again, the words don’t want to come, but he forces them, not missing the double meaning deep in the intended comfort, “I’ll keep my heart beating for you.”

Only then does the vibrant jade come back to her eyes, in the pale morning light of a new day.

I was actually kind of shocked at that scene in the series. You don't usually see death so pointed in a cartoon.
